Ok folks, so I started an actual site and am going to stop posting on blogger. We had a good run, but it's time to move on to bigger and better things. Keep in mind that it is a work in progress still, and the only reason why I am finishing this blog now is that I have the exact same stuff on both. It gets a little difficult to post stuff twice, sometimes I miss something on this one or the other. It's just a pain in the ass.

We admire all forms of dedication -- even the absolutely insane forms. A California steel contractor named Mike Leyde recently displayed one such type of persistence by playing a single round of his casual game of choice, Bejeweled 2, for 2,205 hours and 51 minutes over the course of three years. In that time, he collected 4,872,229 gems, earning the game's highest calculable score, 2,147,483,647, at which point the score display got really perplexed and went blank. According to PopCap, Leyde is the first person to ever "beat" Bejeweled 2. That's one way of looking at it, we suppose. Another way of looking at it is to say that everyone else who's ever played Bejeweled 2 is a quitter. Yeah, that's right. Why don't you follow through with something for once in your life? Sheesh.

A Slushie Before Exercise Boosts Endurance on a Hot Day

An exercise researcher in New Zealand determined that drinking an ice slushie before exercising extended runners' endurance by an average of 10 minutes—a tidbit that might come in handy when you're tackling that 5k this summer.
It's no surprise that a hot day can easily kill your endurance during physical activity, as the article points out:

Blood is directed to the skin for cooling, which means it is diverted from working muscles. The hotter it is, and the harder the effort, the harder exercise becomes. Eventually, you slow down or stop, unable to go on.

Companies and researchers have worked to create gear intended to combat this problem, from cooling vests to portable cold-water baths, but the slushie solution is one pre-cooling effect that works on-the-cheap.

All you have to do is drink an ice slurry, also known as a slushie, before exercising. In a new study, he reports that young male recreational athletes who drank a syrup-flavored ice slurry just before running on a treadmill in hot room could keep going for an average of 50 minutes before they had to stop. When they drank only syrup-flavored cold water, they could run for an average of 40 minutes.

Keep in mind that the slushie solution isn't going to be of much help with longer workouts (don't expect it to keep you going through an entire marathon). If you're exercising to burn some calories, the sugar-y syrup probably isn't the best thing, either. That said, if you're aiming to get a little more performance out of those muscles of yours on a hot summer day, a slushie may be just the ticket.

Today, I'm on a 14 hour trip to the Grand Canyon on a tour bus. Before the bus even started going, a lady took a massive dump in the non-flushable toilet in the back, which stunk up the whole bus. My seat is all the way to the back right in front of the bathroom. FML

Today, I was jamming in a garage studio with people I hadn't met before. After 20 minutes of playing what I thought was alright, the bass player, who I'd had never met, walked over to my amplifier and unplugged my input cable. The rest of the band kept playing like nothing had happened. FML

Because rollerbladez aren't cool anymore but some people still can't shake the feeling they need wheels strapped to their feet, inventor MICHAEEEEEL JEEEEEENKINS! invented Chariot Skates. What are Chariot Skates? Ridiculous looking for one.

Costing up to $11,000 for a pair, the wheel-skate features two large carbon fibre wheels. The skater's feet are suspended below the axle, which is believed to enable a smoother ride than skiing or cycling and can be worn for hours without discomfort.
It can also reach a top speed of 40km/h (~25MPH).
To pull up, skaters need to do a "t-stop," where one foot is dragged sideways on the road surface.
Mr Jenkins, 50, came up with the idea by combining his favourite forms of transport - skiing, cycling and skating. He then started developing it from his garage in 2004.

Microsoft Asked to Make a Federal Budget Video Game

The Obama administration’s Bowles-Simpson fiscal commission has been working with Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer to make a computer game about managing the United States federal budget and deficit, USA Today reports.

President Obama appointed Erskine Bowles and Alan K. Simpson to lead an 18-person, bi-partisan commission to generate ideas for dealing with the nation’s rising deficit and other fiscal challenges. The game is just a footnote amid the commission’s broader objectives, of course, but it’s actually not a bad idea.

“Anyone with a computer” will be able to play, which likely means it will be a web-based game. Each player will be tasked with balancing the federal budget. The game obviously won’t be a completely realistic simulation of that task — if it was, no one would want to play — but it might give some citizens a sense of how difficult the task is.

The commission likely hopes that players will become more sympathetic to the difficult and controversial decisions it will have to make after the game demonstrates that there are no ideal options. Those decisions could include higher taxes and cuts to medicare, social security and other programs.

Conventional wisdom would suggest that the people most upset about the cuts would be aged 65 and older and that video game players are generally quite young, but at least one of those facts isn’t true — players of online games are older than you might think.

This School in England Is the Worst School Ever

During a fire drill at a middle school in Worcester, England, students aged 10 to 13 looked on in horror as "as a man appeared brandishing a gun and appeared to shoot dead Mr. Kent, their science teacher, as he ran across a field." It was only ten minutes after the shooting that teachers revealed the whole thing to be fake. The exercise was apparently "intended to teach Year 8 pupils how to investigate, collect facts and analyse evidence." They couldn't have just pretended to lose the class rabbit, or something?

Pineberry to Make Debut in U.K. Stores

What do you get when you cross a strawberry and a pineapple? A pineberry, of course.
This designer fruit -- a hybrid that looks like a white strawberry with red seeds, but which allegedly smells and tastes like a pineapple -- will be sold in 45 Waitrose supermarkets across the U.K. for the next five weeks while they're in season, ABC News reported.

Cross-breeding fruit to create new varieties is a $100 million business in the U.S., ABC News reported.

About seven years ago the pineberry was taken from its native South America and grown commercially in glasshouses by the dutch, ABC reported. Like strawberries, they're green until they ripen, but instead of turning a deep, juicy red, these fruits turn white, like they've been attacked by Bunnicula.

Pineberries sell for about $4.50 for a 4.5 ounce bag until April 13, after which the price will be hiked up to about $6.00.

KFC's Bacon Sandwich On Fried Chicken "Bread" Starts Killing People Nationwide April 12

Last August, we wrote about the "Double Down," a mysteriously tempting (and potentialy lethal) new food item being tested by KFC. For those coming late to the story, it's bacon and cheese sandwiched between two pieces of fried chicken. And now, many months later, I'll finally be able to get my hands on one.

KFC announced the decision to go live with the Double Down yesterday, but we weren't sure they weren't playing a April Fools gag. But no, they truly are going nationwide with the delicacy on April 12.

The sandwich will be available in two forms. The Original Recipe sandwich will set you back about 540 calories, 32g of fat and 1380mg of sodium. The not-as-bad-for-you Grilled Double Down totals 460 calories, 23g of fat and 1430mg of sodium.
